The basic requirements are easy to understand, but reaching them is a different story. Figuring out how to get viewers as a new streamer is one of the hardest parts of being on Twitch.

The Requirements

The requirements for streamers to become affiliates can be found in the Achievement menu. This page can be reached by clicking on the drop-down menu under your profile and going to the Creator Dashboard. Achievements are under the Insights menu, the second option after Home. The requirements listed are measured in a period of 30 days and read:

  • Reach 50 followersStream for eight hoursStream on seven different daysAverage of three viewers

The 30 day performance period is also listed in the Path To Affiliate Achievement for streamers to better track these statistics.

General Tips

New streamers may feel the frustration of trying to grow but there are some general tips to grow their channel. The tips will slowly help streamers meet the requirements necessary to get monetized on Twitch.

Keeping a consistent schedule for streaming will help viewers to keep track of when the channel goes live. Streamers can add a schedule to their streams as well by going to their Creator Dashboard and clicking on Settings and Channel. This helps to make sure streamers can retain viewers that will have a better idea of when to expect a stream rather than relying on a notification.

Social Media is also a way to increase discoverability, share clips, and increase traffic to the channel. Posting clips on Twitter and TikTok are simple ways to try and explore cross-promotion. Algorithmically, posting links to other sites in posts will decrease visibility so it’s best to leave the Twitch link in the bio rather than posting your channel’s URL in every post.

Twitch is a huge space and there are creators of all shapes and sizes that are more than willing to make friends on the platform. The mutually beneficial nature of networking with other streamers of around the same size creates a bigger following for both streamers. This shouldn’t be done selfishly and is generally discouraged to do with the wrong intentions in a working relationship.

Looking at the viewer count might feel discouraging at first, but continuing to play, commentate, and interact with the audience even with one person will keep a welcoming atmosphere. It also helps for any viewers checking in on the stream while the channel is offline and skimming through the VODs to know that they won’t be tuning into a silent stream.
